Superchan! |
When the Dragons came into Super League, the side boasted almost two hundred French caps and 44 New Zealand ones. 42 of those belonged to the legend that is Stacey Jones, somewhat overshadowing his countryman Alex Chan. However, Chan would become a cult hero at the club, a huge presence on and off the field and that's why he's nominated for the sang-et-or.net Hall Of Fame. |
Chan arrived in Perpignan having played in the NRL for Northern Suburbs, Parramatta and Melbourne and he was at the latter club when he was capped by his country. In no time at all following the move to France, he quickly became a key figure in the side.
 Here comes the pain!
For a side that spends a lot of time cooped up together in hotels, a good team bond is paramount. Chan was at the centre of that during his time at the club. His sense of fun permeated the team, though let nobody be in any doubt that when the time came for work, then work was what was happening. The first time our editor met the man, he was treated to Chan with a towel round his shoulders pretending to fly and baffling the other residents at the hotel. Superchan had landed.
Taking on the line in that semi-final
He was sent off in his first full game for the club, a home match with Leeds and against Wakefield in 2007, both for fighting. That belied his vicious streak, though it took a lot of pushing before it came out.

Chan called time on his career following the 2007 season and returned home with his young family. It's to be hoped that he's not lost to the game as he speaks with rare insight and that balance between hard work and fun is a rare quality that would be of benefit to any club.
With the mini-Chans after his final game
A huge presence in every sense of the term, it could be argued that the Dragons have never really replaced Alex Chan. At the time of writing, with the club in the doldrums, if only he was still around.
