A Wollongong native, 29-year-old Jason Ryles is a prop forward of considerable experience brought in to fill the big shoes of Alex Chan for 2009. The 19st front-rower's statistics are impressive – 156 first grade games for St George-Illawarra, 15 stints in the Kangaroo jersey and he has represented New South Wales on eight occasions. Sounds like just what the team needs, but the rumblings in Australia when this signing was announced suggested a player not as good as he once was, even though he was named St George's player of the year, so it will be interesting to see how he goes in new surroundings in 2009 under a new coach.
